The Pinks

The Pinks, an immersive animation and sound based sculpture installation, was developed over a five year period with the support of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council. Working with a team of animators and a sound designer I created the six animations that make up this work based on figures that I originally hand carved in Styrofoam.

“Though animation based, The Pinks is primarily sculptural for me with movement and sound added to the mix. Scale plays a big part here. The animated characters are intended to have equal presence to the humans in the room. Much like my earlier work, The Pinks reflects aspects of ourselves and our bodily existence in the world. They are fluid in their identity, encouraging slippage between supposedly opposite realms: male/female, human/animal, digital/physical. In the endless loop of each animation, each Pink is dealing with impositions on their being and habitat that seem outside their control. The Pinks are responding with frustration, bewilderment and anger but they are also defiant and determined.”
